B&G supporting Bay of Island Mammal Sancturary
Rules on Dolphins

B&G is all about protecting our oceans, and their global initiative to care for marine environments is at the heart of what they do. We're thrilled to have their support in making sure the Bay of Islands' mammal sanctuary, especially the dolphins, stays front and center as we sail into Russell.

We have been working  closely with DOC around the protection of mammals.  To ensure we abide by all the rules - these are the things you need to know.

  • Should there be dolphins in the Bay of Islands you will be advised of this when you call coast guard when rounding Cape Brett

  • Should you encounter dolphin activity, please text the finish boat on the race numbr - 021 0242 1830 or call VHF 63

  • Please refer to the map which shows a safe zone and no-go areas.

Our exemption expires at 3pm on Saturday 26 October.  Standard rules then apply.  These are

  • Stop your vessel within 300 metres of any marine mammal

  • Remain stopped until the marine mammals are more than 300 metres away (it is not an offence if your vessel drift while stopped).

  • Boats much advise the race committee of any encounters with marine mammals (an encounter is defined as being within 300 metres).
