For many sailors, the PIC Coastal Classic sits firmly on the bucket list.
The thought of crossing the start line off Devonport Wharf, charging up the coast with a crew of mates, and arriving into Russell after one of New Zealand’s most iconic offshore races is enough to get the pulse racing. But for some, turning that ambition into reality can feel overwhelming.

Paperwork. Safety requirements. Ratings. Crew. Compliance. Logistics.
Sometimes the gap between “we should do the Coastal one day” and actually entering can feel bigger than the Hauraki Gulf in a southerly.
To help bridge that gap, the PIC Coastal Classic has launched a new Coastal Classic Concierge Service (CCC) - designed to guide sailors from first thoughts of entering right through to the finish line.
The service provides step-by-step, personal support throughout the entire entry and preparation process, helping remove many of the barriers that can stop sailors from taking part.
The Concierge Service includes support with:
Race entry and crew lists
PHRF rating guidance with Yachting New Zealand
Cat 3 and safety compliance coordination
Crew sourcing assistance
Race versus rally guidance
Access to preparation seminars covering safety, weather, and race readiness
Berthage support where available
On-the-ground logistics in Russell
The goal is simple - make the journey to the start line less daunting and more achievable.
“We know there are sailors who’ve always wanted to do the Coastal, but the preparation can feel daunting, especially the first time,” said Percival. “This is about making the process clearer and more manageable. The Coastal should be exciting from the very beginning.”
It's been designed specifically for:
First-time entrants
Sailors returning to offshore racing after five years or more
“This isn’t just entry support,” said Percival. “It’s the guidance, encouragement, and momentum that takes people from ‘I should do the Coastal one day’ to ‘I’m doing the Coastal.’”
How to Get Involved
Skippers who meet the criteria can email their details to fran@multihull.org.nz and a Coastal Concierge will be assigned to help support them through the entry and preparation process.
Because sometimes all it takes is a little guidance to get to the start line.
